Today, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that police must obtain a warrant based on probable cause to attach a GPS device to a car and track its movements. The case, United States v. Katzin, is the first in which a federal appeals court has explicitly held that a warrant is required for GPS tracking by police.

This is a huge win for citizens. The Fourth Amendment gives us the right to be free from unreasonable government searches and seizures, and the Court affirmed this, holding that attaching a GPS tracking device to a vehicle constitutes a search that must be authorized by a warrant.
